Systems Management - Migrating your company's applications and databases for a competitive edge

Companies are constantly looking for ways to improve their business and gain a competitive edge. Often, these newfound opportunities for improvement have the potential to affect a company's basic IT infrastructure and may require the migration of core applications and databases to a new environment.

The right migration can bring substantial benefits. If chosen correctly, a successful migration can offer real business advantages and rewards. An efficient, open and flexible system does more than simply prepare you for current and future business demands--it can bring lower operating costs and even open your business to new revenue sources. The right migration can help bring fast, substantial and long-running ROI to the company smart enough to recognize the benefits.

When to Consider Migration

If you wait until you need to migrate, you've waited too long. This holds true for custom applications, databases and ISV applications. Conventional wisdom might suggest that a company migrate at or near the end of its current system's lifecycle, getting the most out of current resources and delaying the costs and concerns of a migration until necessary.

Many companies do nothing and run in an unsupported mode for their hardware and application software. While this may appease folks who have the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy, it's a dangerous practice that can cost a company significantly more to migrate when it becomes critical.

Migrating before you have to is a much wiser strategy. One of the biggest liabilities of waiting to migrate is being hit by more demand than the current system can handle. A company also faces significant risks when it tries to maintain technologies no longer supported by the primary vendor.

As the demands of business evolve, systems based on older technologies become less capable of meeting a company's business needs which--at the end of the day--makes the business less competitive.

Plus, if a migration can bring cost benefits, why delay it? The lower operating and maintenance costs that come with newer technologies may mean a migration pays for itself quickly. More businesses are finding that the faster they migrate, the faster they grow.
