In today’s business and economic environment, the challenge for IT is clear: improve responsiveness, reduce costs and boost productivity. Building on the formidable capabilities of DB2* 9 and the System z* platform, the next release of DB2 meets these challenges head on.
DB2 X delivers unique capabilities to drive your competitive advantage. Experience significant performance improvements, along with scalability and availability levels that continue to outpace the industry. These improvements are delivered along with core capabilities that minimize complexity, maximize resource productivity, and reduce CPU and resource costs.
As customers move from DB2 V8 to DB2 9 Conversion Mode (CM), they generally find CPU improvements, particularly in the utilities. Most see CPU reductions of around 20 percent. Picking up where DB2 9 left off, IBM is focusing on “out-of-the-box” CPU processing-time improvements for all workload types including transactions, queries and batch. That means for the same workload, with no application or significant administration changes, you’ll require fewer MIPS and resources.
SQL performance improvements include: more aggressive pushdown of predicate evaluation; more efficient processing of OR and IN predicates; and better use of work files to avoid fallback to table space scans for large queries. Leveraging new database design capabilities—such as in-line large objects (LOBs) and hash access—can bring additional performance improvements and cost savings.
Core performance goals include a 5- to 10-percent improvement for traditional transaction workloads and up to a 20-percent improvement for newer, non-traditional workloads like those that use SQL Stored Procedures. Individual SQL statements may see larger improvements. DB2 X will bring cost savings across all types of workloads. The improved transaction times and lower CPU usage can allow you to be more efficient and effective, deliver more with your current investment and free up capacity for new workload requirements.
