Veryant, a provider of COBOL and Java technology solutions, has helped Italian software provider Sintecop S.p.A. add Java capability to its legacy applications and preserve COBOL assets.
Sintecop provides administrative software applications to local governments and small and mid-sized businesses in Italy. The company wanted to introduce a Java version of its existing application for end users, to simplify development, administration and implementation tasks and ease application modernization.
Sintecop also wanted to reduce rising COBOL licensing costs. The company decided to move its application with 14,000 online and batch COBOL programs to Veryant’s isCOBOL Application Platform Suite (APS). Veryant says the client was attracted to the suite's portability, cost-effectiveness and ease of use.
With isCOBOL APS, Sintecop can retain its core business logic while offering a user-friendly, portable environment that extends to many platforms. While Sintecop primarily deploys in a UNIX environment, isCOBOL can offer even more platform independence and flexibility for future development, according to Veryant. Because the isCOBOL Runtime Environment is written purely in Java, COBOL application developers can develop and deploy across many platforms, including AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, Windows, Mac OS and mainframe systems, using one code base.
