Google and i

Google has become a household name and common turn of speech with the ever-present “I’ll Google that.” In addition to being a search site, Google offers a Google Apps for Business (GA4B) product suite that lets you create different kinds of online documents, work on them in real time with other people, and store your documents and your other files—all online and for minimal cost. With any device with an Internet connection, you can access documents and files, anywhere in the world—as can your employees, your clients or your vendors. GA4B are accessed completely in the cloud.

Cloud computing enables companies to access software and services via the Internet rather than through local computers and/or servers. This method has made it easier and more affordable for companies to use enterprise-grade technology solutions provided by third-party providers rather than invest in expensive technology, more personnel and system upgrades. These cost savings explain why so many businesses have exchanged expensive storage systems and servers for the convenience and power of the cloud.

Some of the key benefits of the cloud are mobility, increased security and reliability, lower costs and scalability. Mobility translates to any device with an Internet connection will let you do your job. Increased security and reliability is a result of SAS70 Type II level of security and the archival of your data—often geo-redundantly—to provide peace of mind. Costs are lower because a subscription-based payment model eliminates the need to purchase servers, software and data centers, not to mention the duplication of all the above for high availability. Scalability translates to use what you need, when you need it.

The following list is a sampling of the current GA4B suite consists of the following applications:

  • Gmail—Huge inbox with search: keep and find everything
  • Calendar—Make sharing calendars and schedules easy
  • Talk—Business-class instant messaging and video chat as easy as email
  • Docs—Make real-time collaborating as easy as creating
  • Sites—Allow users to create and manage their own sites
  • Videos—Unlock the power of video in your organization
  • Groups—Let users easily create, work, succeed in teams
  • Security—Security, discovery and compliance solutions
  • Voice—One number for all your phones, online voicemail and cheap calling

I say current because the list evolves as more users finding the value in the products and ask for more, such as features they had previously used in other office suite products. Google itself also continues to roll out new integration modules.
