A quick summary of the latest announcements

In the cover story this month, Lee Cleveland, Distinguished Engineer, Power Systems direct attach storage, and Andy Walls, Distinguished Engineer, chief hardware architect for DS8000 and solid-state drives (SSDs), sat down to talk about all of the new storage technologies IBM has been releasing lately. What I didn’t have room for in the article was a nice summary of the technologies that can help you improve access, manage growth, protect data, reduce costs or reduce complexity. IBM Storwize V7000

New advanced software functions

Scalability enhancements

  • Supports up to 4x the previous capacity
  • Enables clients to virtualize larger environments

Systems Director Storage Control V4.2.1

  • Systems Director Storage Control is a plug-in to Systems Director
  • Extends Systems Director‘s capabilities to include SVC and Storwize V7000
  • One tool to manage all providing ease of management
  • Manage end-to-end lifecycle of storage from one console on one server
  • Health, configuration, capacity, integrated provisioning, topology, updates, alerts
  • Agnostic of SMIS or non-SMIS, IBM or non IBM, small or large
  • Plug-in simplifies platform management through integrated server and storage management
  • Reduce IT costs with comprehensive, integrated, storage management
  • Reduce complexity and risk of managing IT operations - “a single pane of glass” including storage and networking devices
  • Increase efficiency through better utilization and management of IT resources

Runs on: The Storage Control plug-in supports most of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Microsoft Windows, and AIX operating systems that Systems Director also supports, with these exceptions: Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Power Systems, Red Hat Enterprise Linux on System z systems, and SUSE Linux Enterprise. IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center V4.2

IBM XIV Storage System Enhancements

Major Enhancements

  • Storage management usability enhancements
  • Automated snapshot management through Tivoli FlashCopy Manager 2.2
  • Tivoli Storage Productivity Center (TPC) support
  • Enhanced support for virtualized server environments, which now supports VMware 4.1 with vCenter as well as VMware Site Recovery Manager 4.1 for simplified disaster-recovery management
  • Extending XIV capability for file and block data as well as in SAN clusters
  • Network file serving via the IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage (SONAS) gateway
  • IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) special licensing
  • Increased performance without increased power utilization for higher capacity systems with up 25 percent higher performance for XIV 2TB disk systems enabled through delivery of 16GB cache per module

Tivoli Key Lifecycle Management V2

Key Features

  • Centralized and simplified encryption key management
  • Support for the new key management standard, Key Management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP) allows support for both IBM self-encrypting storage as well as a number of supported non-IBM devices
  • KMIP support permits customers to deploy TKLM without having to worry about being locked into a proprietary key management solution
  • Role-based access control allows multiple administrators with different roles and permissions to be defined
  • Access control and partitioning of the key serving functions enables multi-tenancy or multi-layer security of a shared infrastructure
